Job Summary: The Clinical Nutrition Specialist in the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine provides comprehensive nutrition services and relevant Medical Nutrition Therapy to medically high-risk individuals and groups in an outpatient setting for nutrition-related problems, chronic disease management, for prevention and wellness. Collaborating with providers and clinicians within the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program is a major component of workload. The Clinical Nutrition Specialists works closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide individual or group diabetes self-management care or other medical nutrition group classes that is integrated and compatible with the patient-focused medical goals and objectives. Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP), including completion of the nutrition assessment, determination of the nutrition diagnosis, developing and implementing nutrition intervention(s), and monitoring and evaluating of the patient’s progress. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist uses the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Standards and Code of Ethics and Clinical Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines for nutrition care and practice-specific dietetics, to help determine nutrition intervention(s). The Clinical Nutrition Specialist also performs business and supervisory functions, such as management of resources in a cost-effective manner, and participates in compliance and quality performance improvement efforts to ensure that nutrition care is safe and effective. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, serving as a resource on nutrition management of diabetes and its complications; is involved in team conferences; provides food and nutrition-related in-services; and contributes to the development and revision of hospital policies. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist also may be involved in community-based nutrition programs and maintains professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Special certification such as a Certified Diabetes Educator, RI Certified Diabetes Outpatient Educator or other nutrition specialization may be required.
Specifications: Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, or related area, granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Master’s Degree preferred Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Specialty nutrition certification such as CDE or CDOE or others may be required. Four years of experience as a clinical dietitian/nutritionist recommended.
