The Medical Processing Specialist provides support in the clinical and office functions of the department. The individual is responsible for obtaining blood specimens from patients for analysis.  Must be able to scan patient documents utilizing suitable software creating a computerized patient file.  Performs various screening tests and associated recordkeeping for the proper collection, identification, and processing of laboratory specimens.  Must be able to enter orders electronically and to help with other clerical needs.  Collects blood specimens and checks quality of blood, assuming responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients and adherence to established standards and practices. Serves as a resource to assist physicians for patient exams and preparation for procedures.  Provides support for patient information systems.

High School graduate or equivalent required and at least one year of experience in a medical office or previous phlebotomy experience in the health care field required.  Completion of an approved Medical Assistant program with phlebotomy as part of the program or certificate of completion of a phlebotomy training program required.  Must have and maintain current CPR certification. Must be proficient in the English language. Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technician by the R. I. Department of Health.   Manual dexterity required to handle phlebotomy supplies and equipment and to perform collections, screening tests, etc. Must have knowledge or ability to work with automated and computerized patient information systems.

Certification as MA in the State of Massachusetts required with Phlebotomy.
